Athlete of the Month: September 2018
Matthew Roesener: September 2018 Member of the Month
Caffeinated CrossFit, Smyrna, GA
Matt was dragged into the community when his friend and boss, Katy, convinced him to try out. Over a year later and he not only gets his wife and kids to the gym on a regular basis, but he is training to take the next step and learn about what it takes to be a coach. In his first year, he has competed in CrossFit competitions and dropped in to other boxes during his travels. He brings his positive attitude to every class and he works hard during every workout, constantly striving to improve his technique before taking on more weight. These are just a few of the many reasons we chose him to be our Member of the Month.
Some fun facts about Matt:
(Q) Occupation: (A) Professional Air Line Geek
(Q) How long have you been at Caffeinated CrossFit? (A) 1.5 years
(Q) What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit? (A) Spending time with my family, traveling when we can. My oldest son Chandler and I love watching Crossfit Games videos.
(Q) What is your biggest achievement so far? (A) Getting pull-ups and pulling 335 1RM deadlift
(Q) What are your future goals? (A) I want to get better at the basic lifting movements and keep working on cardio. Finish full Murph with a vest.
(Q) Any advice for anyone just starting their CrossFit journey? (A) Don’t be intimidated by the better athletes or all the terminology - the best part of Crossfit is that it can be scaled to suit your goals and ability levels. Be open to feedback, and be consistent about coming in. I also had to throw away the idea that I was on a specific schedule since I have kids - commit to the number of times and try to make it work based on reality :). If you don’t make it, at least keep moving (Air Squats, push-ups, sit-ups, burpees are all doable at home or in a hotel). Oh... and MOBILIZE (stretch).
(Q) Favorite Cheat Meal. (A) Siracusas’s pizza and wings with blue cheese.
(Q) CrossFit Secret: (A) On Metcons take three deep breaths and then keep going. On lifts, don’t let your ego push you heavier than you should be - get the form right first.
(Q) On Rest Days: (A) I’m usually on a plane somewhere, so trying to avoid the worst of the plane food.
(Q) Who is your box buddy? (A) My wife Jessica, and all my 6AM peeps (shout out to Sheffina, Macky, Joe, Richard and Kesia. And Mary for keeping us in line). - we miss you Katy!!!
