Athlete of Month: December 2018
Carol Killworth: December 2018 Member of the Month
Caffeinated CrossFit, Smyrna, GA
Carol is synonymous with the noon class. As long as she is in town, she is at the gym and she always accepts the challenge each workout brings. She pushes herself while also encouraging others every workout every class. The coaches all agree, Carol is a great choice and unanimously voted December member of the month.
Some fun facts about Carol:
Name: Carol Killworth
Age: 53 in December
Occupation: Vice President of Partnerships at Project Lead The Way (PLTW) - We are a non-profit organization that provides STEM curriculum to schools throughout the country. We receive a great deal of support from large corporate partners and I work primarily with Chevron and Lockheed Martin.
How long have you been at Caffeinated CrossFit? I began at Caffeinated the day after I moved to Atlanta last year - August 6, 2017
What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit? Workout wise I enjoy yoga, walking, the elliptical and running. For fun, my husband and I are big foodies and love wine, so we are always on the hunt for new restaurants and wine tastings. We love the arts and enjoy theater, movies, museums and travel. This year we decided to learn to dance - although we are not very good - we are having a lot of fun trying!
What is your biggest achievement so far? In May of 2017, I graduated from Marian University in Indianapolis, with a bachelors of business administration. I earned my degree in 3 years while working full-time, proving it is never too late for anyone! I also have two awesome grown children, who make me proud every day.
What are your future goals? If my crazy travel schedule ever slows down, I would like to participate in at least one competition, but I need a partner! Until then, I need to go back to the basics and work on my form so that I can make more progress and not be disqualified if I am able to compete!
Any advice for anyone just starting their CrossFit journey? Don't be intimidated. You don't have to lift crazy heavy weights. Have fun, laugh at - but learn from - your mistakes. Getting to the gym is the biggest battle you have to overcome.
Favorite Cheat Meal - French fries (correctly known as chips) - but they don't count if I eat them off someone else's plate.
CrossFit Secret - Never in my wildest dreams - or nightmares - did I imagine myself taking up CrossFit!
On Rest Days: Rest days are usually Sundays and that's when I go to yoga and find time to walk at Heritage Park or on the Silver Comet Trail. I also like to catch up on British TV shows - thank goodness for Amazon Prime and Netflix.
What you can't live without: My husband, my kids and my dog (Oliver). English teabags, chocolate, a hot bath and a good book.
Who is your box buddy? Since Melody left us for Sarosota, Lynn and Kam are my most consistent box buddies, although I may have scared Kam away by inadvertently assaulting her with the PVC pipe (sorry Kam). At times, the lunch time crowd can be a little thin, so on those days Mary is my box buddy! P.S. Cassandra Vines - We need you back at the gym.
Coach Kat comments, “Carol is a delight to have in class. She is so positive and cheery. She pushes herself every time and by the way is hell of strong at farmers carries. Congrats!”
Coach Jess adds, “Carol is a fun athlete to have in class. She’s got a great attitude and always pushes herself. Plus, her sense of humor is on point. Congrats, Carol! “
“Carol has more mental toughness than 90% of the athletes I've encountered in my life. The level of grit she brings to every workout is inspiring, and I only wish I could bring that level of motivation to my own training everyday. I pity the fool who goes up against her in anything involving a weighted run, a calorie row, a calorie bike, or a farmer's carry, because they're going to lose for one simple reason; she never stops. Carol, congratulations on being member of the month and I'll see you in the pain cave.” says Coach Kelsey.
Coach Mary exclaims, “Carol is a staple of the noon class! She always has a bubbly personality and great attitude even when she has to do the assault bike! She is capable of more than she realizes and is constantly hitting PRs and improving on her form!”
