Tips from a Newbie: Do I Have to Eat Like a Caveman?

(Disclaimer: I am not a doctor! These tips have worked for me, and I wanted to share them with you as you start your CrossFit journey)

Years ago, I had an amazing boss. I knew she was very into CrossFit, marathons and anything healthy. I also knew she would microwave a sweet potato and eat it for lunch every day. For years, that's what I thought Crossfit was about—eating plain sweet potatoes that were baked in the microwave.

Then I heard about Paleo. It seemed a little silly to me that, with all of the types of food we have available now, we should revert back to eating the way our ancestors ate.

I am not here to discuss the merits of microwaveable sweet potatoes or Caveman Cuisine. But I will say that I didn't change my eating habits for the first few months after starting CrossFit. And guess what—that was reflected on the scale

Losing weight (one of my goals) is 80% diet and only 20% exercise. The lack of results started to frustrate me, so I started to think about what I ate. Around that time, our box decided to do a nutrition challenge that focused on eating Paleo. However, due to my schedule, I missed the beginning of the challenge and decided to try Whole30 instead.

Eating whole foods not only made a significant impact on the way I felt (I actually had energy during the workout), but also on the scale. If you are new to CrossFit, I would recommend giving some thought to your goals, and whether the food you're consuming is going to help you reach them.

Every person is different, and your ideal diet may vary—but anything is better than getting in a hard workout and getting fast food afterwards.
